GENERAL

  1. To advise the Minister on all matters concerning the medical and dental profession.
  2. To establish and improve standards of all branches of the medical and dental professions in all their aspects to safeguard the interests of all medical practitioners and dentists.
  3. To establish and improve standards of healthcare within the Republic.

MEDICAL AND DENTAL TRAINING

  1. To make provisions for the training and instructions of persons seeking registration or licencing under the Act. To appoint persons to visit medical or dental schools and to Act as observers in all or any of the qualifying examinations.
  2. To scrutinize the syllabuses of instructions and courses of training for persons seeking registration and licencing under the Act, and to advise the Minister, if at any time it appears to the Board that the course of study or examinations for Registerable qualifications are not such as to secure the requisite knowledge and skill for the efficient practice of the medical and dental professions. The Minister may in such circumstances order that such insufficient or inadequate course of study or examinations shall not be a qualification registerable under the Act.
  3. To recommend to the Director of Medical Services institutions to be approved for training of persons seeking registration of licensing under the Act.

ASSESSMENT OF DOCTORS AND DENTISTS

  1. To prescribe and conduct assessment examination for persons who wish to be registered or licenced under the Act.

DISCIPLINE

  1. To have regard to the conduct of persons registered or licenced under this Act and to take such disciplinary measures as may be necessary to maintain a proper standard of conduct among such persons.
  2. To have regard to the standards of medical and dental care, qualified staff, facilities, conditions and environment of health institutions.
  3. To recommend to the Director of Medical Services the appointment of local supervising authorities.

CO-ORDINATION WITH OTHER STATUTORY BOARD, COUNCILS ETC

  1. To co-ordinate its activities with other statutory Boards or Councils, such as the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, the Nursing Council, the University Council, Central Board of Health, Public Health Standard Board, Veterinary Board of Kenya etc.

REGISTRATION AND LICENCING

  1. To direct and supervise the compilation and maintenance of a register and all records required to be kept under sections 6,13,14,15 of the Act.
  2. To regulate private practice.
  3. To such things as are incidental to the performance of all or any of the foregoing functions.

ANNUAL REPORT

  1. The Board shall, before the end of February in each year, cause a report on the activities carried out by the Board during the previous year together with a statement of the accounts for that year, to be supplied to the Minister, and shall cause such further information to be supplied to him. The annual report shall include information received from all approved medical institutions in the Republic. This report shall be published.

PROTECTION OF THE PUBLIC

  1. Notwithstanding the forgoing the Board shall always act in such a manner as to protect the public by ensuring that medical practitioners and dentists are properly qualified, that they perform their services to patients with skill and diligence and that they observe at all times high moral and ethical standards.
  2. Any other matters that may arise from time to time.
